The groups behind Adelaide's scene

Adelaide Leather and Fetish Inc, known as AL&F, says it began in 2016 as a leather social group and was renamed in 2018 to be more inclusive. It describes its aim as a safe, fully inclusive space for the fetish and kink community. Its conduct rules ban hate speech and verbal or physical abuse, and anyone having sex at a venue that is not licensed for it is removed from the event.

Its Fetish Social is the easiest way in. It runs on the second Saturday of each month and is a meal, a drink and a chat. It is open to all sexualities, genders and expressions, the dress rule is public-appropriate fetish attire, and it is not sexual or play-focused. AL&F does not publish the venue on that page, so ask a committee member or follow its social media pages. In November the social gives way to the GEAR'd welcome drinks.

Rope in Adelaide

Peer Rope Adelaide is a shibari group with weekly classes. Its site lists membership at $20, which gives members a discounted class ticket. The beginners class, Knot 1, welcomes people who come alone. The next class, Knot 2, covers floor rope and needs a tying partner, because it does not cater for singles.

Its posted expectations are worth reading before you go: a consent-positive space, no tying if you are tired, injured or affected by drugs or alcohol, respect for other people's space and scenes, safety shears and clean equipment. All its events are 18 and over.

GEAR'd Weekend

GEAR'd is the city's big annual date, run by AL&F every November since 2017. The 2026 edition is the tenth and runs from 18 to 22 November. Wednesday opens with free welcome drinks at Pirate Life Brewing in Port Adelaide. The main programme at The Wakefield Hotel runs from Thursday to Saturday: a fetish runway, the Adelaide Leather and Adelaide Rubber title competitions, a free fetish market, workshops on subjects such as wax play, the EVOLUTION BDSM dungeon and fetish dance party, and a photography exhibition. Sunday closes with a free recovery picnic in Whitmore Square as part of Feast Festival.

The rules are clear and published: 18 and over, no sex on premises, genitals covered while nipples and bare bottoms are allowed, and a coloured wristband if you would rather not be photographed by the official photographer. The listed venues are wheelchair accessible, and tickets are non-refundable.

Finding people in a smaller city

In a city of Adelaide's size it helps to assume circles overlap, so think about how much you want to share early on. On BdsmMatchFinder you choose what goes on your profile. Other members see only your nearest town or city, and your real name and email are never shown publicly.

Classic members receive daily match suggestions, and VIP members can filter by city, distance, experience level and what someone is open to. That is a useful way to arrive at a social or a class already knowing one person.

What membership costs

Classic is free for good, with a full profile, browsing and a limited number of messages a day. The paid plans are in Australian dollars below, with the total you pay and the weekly equivalent underneath.

Elsewhere in Australia

Before a first meeting

Choose a public place for a first meeting, tell a friend where you will be, and talk through limits and a safeword before anything physical. A first conversation in a public place keeps everyone comfortable, and a message to a friend with the time and place takes a minute.

Questions people ask

Is there a kink scene in a city the size of Adelaide?

Yes. Adelaide Leather and Fetish holds a monthly social and runs GEAR'd Weekend each November, and Peer Rope Adelaide teaches shibari every week. Meeting people online first makes the first event much easier.

Do I have to wear fetish gear to go to a social?

At the AL&F Fetish Social the dress rule is public-appropriate fetish attire, so wear what suits you and would be fine in a pub. Check each group's own page, because dress codes differ between events.

Do I need a partner to start rope classes?

Peer Rope says singles are welcome in its beginners class, Knot 1. Its second class, Knot 2, needs a tying partner and does not cater for singles.

What does it cost in Adelaide?

Classic is free. VIP and VIP+ prices are listed in Australian dollars above, with the total you pay, and in full on the pricing page.

What if I am new to all this?

Start with a profile and a few conversations, then try a social. Our beginner's guide and the glossary cover the vocabulary you will hear.
